Set in Brooklyn, In The Morning is a feature film about love and its inevitable change/decline. It charts the emotional anatomy of the lives, loves, infidelities, and enduring friendships of a group of inter-connected New Yorkers over the course of one day.

A searing journey through the lives of nine smart, fiercely articulate New Yorkers. Friends: Harper, Ravi, Fez, Bly and Amara gather to bid farewell to one of their own moving abroad, and debate the compromise and

loss of their youthful ideals regarding marriage, fidelity, life and love. Two lovers: Malik and Cadence, meet to ceremoniously end a whirlwind romance that has collapsed under the weight of fears, obligations and regrets. A couple: Zuri and Leal, sift through the remains of their broken relationship as they try to make a life altering decision. They begin to come to terms with their disintegrated trust, and the possibility of renewal. For everyone, life will be indelibly altered in the morning.

What They’re Saying About In The Morning

Philadelphia Inquirer logo

“Visually and poetically arresting…looks and sounds like ‘The Big Chill’- if written by Zora Neale Hurston.”

Shadow and Act

“Nguvu crafts each relationship and character as its own poem.”

“A cinematic exploration of love that champions complex characters of color
and much more critical examinations of love at every stage of life.”

“Nefertite Nguvu’s In The Morning explores the many facets of Black relationships”

“All the characters seem to be running from something, even those who initially appear to have it all together/figured out.”

BK Reader

In the Morning is a colorful, funny, dialogue-driven movie about black women living in contemporary Brooklyn.”

“Nefertite Nguvu’s In The Morning is a New York movie, the kind where attractive, intelligent people philosophize and, mostly, talk about their love lives.”

IN THE MORNING is a truly independent film that would not exist without the support of our community. This film
was funded through two successful kickstarter campaigns alongside additional grass roots fundraising
filmmaker Nefertite Nguvu’s personal savings.

“I was in a holding pattern waiting for funding and for someone to give me the green light for quite some time until I decided to go to my own community for funding. I launched the first kickstarter campaign, dipped into my own savings, credit cards, and had some other investors that came on board as well. It was truly a labor of love. People believed in the project and pitched in to make it happen.

After principal photography, it took two years in post-production to gather the resources in order to complete IN THE MORNING. I knew that it would not be easy, as our film doesn’t fit within the narrow lens in which most films about Black lives are viewed, but I refused to give up. Given our current socio-political climate, I know that expanding our narrative and telling our stories matters tremendously.

The challenges in the dominant landscape of traditional film distribution are staggering, from the financial inequities, to the deeply segregated, exclusionary practices that determine whose voice gets to be heard. Unsatisfied with the offers before me, I began to research emerging distribution platforms to find the best way to connect IN THE MORNING with its audience. I decided once again to side step the gatekeepers, and return to my community for the green light, launching a second Kickstarter campaign to support the costs of an independent distribution model.

Our Kickstarter campaigns were about leveling the playing field, creating access, demystifying the process; also empowering myself and other filmmakers like me, by demonstrating what is possible with community. More than anything else, I want us to see ourselves.” ~ Nefertite Nguvu

Nefertite Nguvu and BlackStar will partner to host a screening of the award-winning film In The Morning. The debut feature narrative, written and directed by Nguvu, charts the emotional anatomy of the lives, loves, infidelities, and enduring friendships of a group of interconnected New Yorkers over the course of one day.

Independently funded and shot in just eight days in Brooklyn, NY, the film delves into the emotional landscape of contemporary black life in a way rarely seen in modern cinema. “In the Morning” is a sophisticated adult drama, with both humor and intensity reminiscent of early Spike Lee and Woody Allen films, yet marks the arrival of a bold new voice in filmmaking.

Photographed by award-winning cinematographer Arthur Jafa (“Daughters of the Dust,” “Crooklyn”), and color-timed by Malik Sayeed (“Belly”), the film’s ensemble cast includes: Jacky Ido, Emayatzy Corinealdi, Numa Perrier, Kim Hill, De’adre Aziza, Hoji Fortuna, JoNell Kennedy and making debut’s Alzo Slade and CJ Lindsey.

“In the Morning” will also be available worldwide via Video On Demand on Amazon, Vimeo on Demand, Xfinity Streampix and VHX starting April 20.

Premiering at the 2014 UrbanWorld Film Festival, “In the Morning” won the Audience Award for Best Feature Film at UrbanWorld, Best International Film at the Terra Di Siena Film Festival in Italy, Best Narrative Feature at the BlackStar Film Festival in Philadelphia, and Best Feature Film and Best Overall at the Bronzelens Film Festival in Atlanta.
